The Heart of the Christian Faith

What is the Gospel?

The word “gospel” means “good news.” But it is not good news about us — it is good news about what God has done in Jesus Christ to rescue sinners from His just judgment. Here is the whole story.

Part 1

The Problem: We Are Sinners

Every person who has ever lived apart from Christ stands under the just condemnation of a holy God. We are not guilty because we happened to make bad choices. We are guilty by nature — born with a heart that is curved inward, inclined toward rebellion, and hostile to God's authority over us.

The Bible calls this sin. It is not a flaw in our upbringing or a mistake in our circumstances. Sin is the defining mark of the human race since Adam, and it runs deeper than behavior. It lives in our desires, our thoughts, and our affections. Every thought, every word, every deed that falls short of God's perfect standard is an expression of the rebellion that lives within us.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 3:23

The law of God makes this rebellion visible. The Ten Commandments are not suggestions — they are the holy and righteous character of God compressed into plain language. When we look at them honestly, we see that we have broken them in thought if not in deed, in attitude if not in action. The law does not create sin; it exposes it.

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.

James 2:10

And the wages of sin — the just consequence of breaking a holy God's law — is death. Not merely physical death, but eternal separation from God in hell, a conscious and everlasting punishment for every thought, word, and deed that has dishonored Him.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23

The Good News: God Made a Way

Here is where the good news becomes staggering. God did not leave sinners to suffer the punishment they deserve. In infinite mercy, He made a way for guilty people to be forgiven — not by setting aside His justice, but by satisfying it.

He sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. This is the great mystery of godliness: the eternal God became a man. Jesus was fully human — born of a virgin, tempted in every way as we are — and fully divine, existing in the form of God from all eternity. He is Immanuel, God with us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

John 1:1, 14

Jesus lived a perfect life. Where Adam failed, Christ succeeded. He obeyed the law of God in thought, word, and deed — not for His own benefit, but as our representative. His obedience is counted as our obedience. Then, at the cross, He took the punishment we deserved. He died the death that was ours — the Just for the unjust, the Holy One bearing the wrath of God that guilty sinners should have borne.

He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5

And on the third day, God raised Him from the dead. The tomb is empty. The resurrection is not a spiritual metaphor — it is a historical fact. Christ is alive, reigning at the right hand of the Father, and certain to return in glory to judge the living and the dead.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:3–4

The Response: Faith and Repentance

The gospel is not merely information — it demands a response. God commands all people everywhere to repent and believe. These are two sides of the same turning.

Repentanceis a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. It means you stop pretending that your sin is small or that you are basically good. You agree with God that your transgression is an offense against infinite holiness, and you turn from it — not in your own strength, but as a gift of God's grace.

The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent.

Acts 17:30

Faith is not merely believing that Jesus existed. Even the demons believe that. Saving faith is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation — resting your whole weight on His righteousness as your only hope of being declared right with God. It is looking away from yourself and your performance and fixing your eyes on Christ, who kept the law in your place and died the death you deserved.

All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.

John 6:37

Faith and repentance are gifts of God's grace, not products of the human will. God opens blind eyes and softens hard hearts. He grants repentance that leads to life (Acts 11:18). This does not make human responsibility a fiction — you must turn from your sin and trust Christ — but it guarantees that the response, like the rescue, is ultimately from God.

Part 4

The Result: Justified and Made New

When a person genuinely repents and believes, God acts. He declares that person righteous in His sight — not because anything in the sinner has changed, but because of what Christ has done. This declaration is called justification.

In justification, two extraordinary things happen simultaneously. First, our sins are forgiven — every one of them, past, present, and future. God remembers them no more. Second, the righteousness of Christ is imputedto us — His perfect obedience is counted as ours. Justification is not God making us holy; it is God declaring us legally righteous on the basis of Christ's finished work.

For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21

This is the great exchange: Christ took our sin so that we might receive His righteousness. The judge becomes our Advocate. The condemned are set free. The holy law of God is satisfied — not violated, not set aside, but honored to the full by the obedience and suffering of God's own Son.

For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Romans 3:28

And there is more. Those who are justified are also regenerated — born again by the Holy Spirit. Your heart is changed. The Spirit of God moves into you, giving you a new affection for Christ and a new desire to obey Him. You are adopted into God's family as His child, given the Spirit of adoption, and promised an inheritance that will never fade, spoil, or perish.

Those whom He predestined He also called, and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also glorified.

Romans 8:30

This is not a temporary fix. It is a secure salvation. The same God who planned your redemption in eternity past, accomplished it at the cross, and applied it by the Spirit at the moment you believed — that same God will bring you safely home to glory. Nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Our Confessional Standard

What We Mean When We Say “Gospel”

This summary is consistent with the historic Baptist and Reformed understanding of the gospel, as expressed in the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith (chapters 8–11). We believe the good news of Jesus Christ is the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes.
